Harlaw & Thriepmuir Reservoirs
Malleny Angling Association holds the bank fishing rights to Harlaw Reservoir and to the north bank of Threipmuir Reservoir - from the fishing hut to the west, eastwards to the Black Springs, a distance of approximately 1.5 miles.

By Nigel Duncan

The fishing season opens at Harlaw Reservoir above Balerno on April 1 and the executive managers of Malleny Angling, who administer the water, are keen to encourage more young people into the sport.

Under a new rule, keen anglers under the age of 18 will be permitted to fish free at Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs when accompanied by an adult who has a valid permit.

Robert Ross, company secretary of Malleny Angling, who administer Harlaw and also bank fishing on Threipmuir Reservoir between Black Springs and The Boathouse, explained the new system.

He said: "We noted a surge of interest in angling during the aftermath of lockdown caused by the world-wide COVID-19 outbreak. Thereafter, we saw that more young people were interested in taking up the sport and we are all for that.

"The executive managers feel we have to do more to encourage young people into the sport we love and therefore we have agreed that all young people under the age of 18 fishing will be allowed to fish free when accompanied by a parent or adult over 18 years of age who has a valid permit.

"The rule states that the adult permit holder may only have one under 18 year old fishing with him. The catch and release permit is not transferrable and the adult permit holder must sign a disclaimer before commencing fishing. The safety of all anglers is of paramount importance and the young angler must be supervised at all times.

"The young angler will be subject to a strict catch and return rule and must fish with barbless hooks."

Ross said information about joining, buying season tickets, and the price of day permits will be posted on the Malleny Angling social media platform on Facebook.

Fishing at Harlaw is by fly rod only, centrepin reel, line, and hand-tied artificial flies or lures. No spinning is allowed and no float tube or boat fishing is permitted and you must be a member or season ticket holder or buy a day ticket to fish.

Day permits are only available online at Malleny Angling and all fish taken are only for personal use and are not to be sold or exchanged for profit.

Ross added: "Regular patrols are mounted during the close season to ensure that poaching is not undertaken and to ensure that our stock of fish is maintained throughout the winter."

Season tickets £275

Day ticket £28

Day ticket catch and release £25

Bag limit three for season and day ticket anglers

Fishing 7 am to dusk, seven days
