Dunoon Reservoir – A 5-acre reservoir situated in natural woodland near Dunoon. Stocked with hard fighting Rainbow Trout of a good average size. Fly fishing only. There are a limited number of daily permits. Pre-booking is advisable.
Dunoon Reservoir is stocked on a regular basis, situated behind Dunoon, and is surrounded by woodland walks. Fishing during the winter from November to March produces some of the best-conditioned fish with full tails which will give you a good fight. The best method for this time of year would be a fast sinking line with a short leader combined with slowly fished lures and boobies. If however the conditions are calm and fish are rising then you cannot go wrong using a floating line and a team of two or three buzzers. As the weather starts to warm up towards the end of April and towards June the fish start rising and a well-placed dry fly will not go unnoticed and provides some very good fishing. Come the Summer months of July and August lures will work particularly the Cats Whisker or Viva on a slow sinking line. In the later months of September and October, the best methods are sinking lines paired with bright nymphs and boobies in yellow and orange. A consistent and useful fly to have in your box throughout the year is a Damsel, especially a red-headed variant.
Visitors occasionally have difficulty finding their way up to Dunoon Reservoir. Directions are as follows: Go to Nelson Street as indicated by the red arrow on the map, carry on up the hill to the top of the street, through the trees following the single-track road, bearing in mind this area is used by numerous dog walkers and pedestrians at all times of the day so please keep your speed to a minimum, follow the road up to the car park, please be observant of the allocated disabled parking areas. The reservoir is a comfortable 25-minute walk from the Paint Shop.

THE TROUT LOCHS
The four trout lochs are all very different, each with its own character and appeal. Amidst the most spectacular scenery and wildlife, all are within easy walking distance of the shop and all stocked frequently with prime, hard-fighting Rainbow trout. The Inverawe and Lily Loch are both suitable for disabled bank fishing, with car access to the lochside. Permits are purchased at the shop
Beginner’s Loch –Hugo’s Lochan
Just below the shop, this loch was named after Robert and Rosie’s great nephew Hugo and is for beginners only. Without trees to ensure snag-free casting, it has started many fishermen onto a lifelong hobby. Stocked with smaller fish, you can be assured a fun day's sport. Introductory fishing lessons are given on this loch (lessons must be booked in advance).
The Hydro Loch
This loch simulates a sea pool, with a pebble bottom and a deep hole. Tree free, for straight–forward fishing, it is very good on windy days.
The Inverawe Loch
The home loch overlooking Inverawe House with a peat bottom, consistent depth, and some trees, ideal for intermediate fishing. The Inverawe Loch is very popular with the locals and you will often find Willie, Harry, and John fishing here “on a dry morning”.

The Lily Loch
A good stalking loch, suitable for the more experienced fishermen. This original fishing pond is peat and gravel bottomed, with variable depths. Ideal for nymphing and dry flies. Some small, natural brown trout in addition to stocked rainbows

Loch Fad (Rainbow and Brown Trout) – 175 acres, the ‘long loch’ is situated on the lovely Island of Bute off the west coast of Scotland and lies directly along the Highland fault line. It is classified by Scottish Natural Heritage as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) for its scenic beauty and its huge diversity of bird life and vegetation. The loch is surrounded by wooded hills, including one of the first commercial Douglas Fir plantations dating from the 1840s.
With a maximum depth of 36 feet at the narrows, the ends of the loch have shallower areas ideal for fly fishing and although fish can be taken all over, the south end does tend to fish better as the water warms.
Loch Quien
Loch Quien is catch and release only and has wild and stocked Brown Trout and is a low-lying fertile loch that can produce lovely fish, but can be a real challenge. It is easily accessible and is quiet and beautiful. Fishing is strictly Fly Only and there are 4 boats on the loch, without outboards, as the fish are easily spooked. At around 90 acres it has good areas of shallow water for wading. Loch Quien fishes better early morning or late evening with traditional flies and nymphs. If the fishing’s slow, large black flies can at times pull a good fish or two and flies like Greenwells, Dunkeld, Blue Zulu, Olive Woolyworm, Pheasant Tail Nymph and Hoppers in Orange or Black are worth trying.
Day tickets are £14 and are available from the Loch Fad Office and also from Bute Angling & Outdoors, the fishing shop located on Albert Place in Rothesay just opposite the ferry terminal. There are 5 boats available for hire at £7 per day...

Anglers can have the chance to catch wild brownies in over 20 moorland lochs. Some are off the beaten track, but most are easily accessible. There is freshwater fishing in nearby Loch Awe with rainbow trout, wild brown trout and ferox trout, salmon, sea trout, arctic char, pike, and perch.
Be sure to pick up a copy of the Oban & Lorn Angling Club’s “Guide to the Lochs” before you set out. Weekly/day tickets and hill loch permits are available at Oban fishing tackle shops. Permits can also be obtained from Kilmelford Village Shop for fishing on Loch Oude (10 mins drive away) or from Scammadale Farm for fishing on Loch Scammadale (20 mins drive away). Weekly ticket holders can hire boats on some lochs.
