The county of Caithness the most northerly on the mainland like many other counties in Scotland has over 100 lochs with fish.  Open moor runs down to the sea with many lochs draining through small streams and rivers.  Trout is of good quality ranging from a 1/2 to 2lb.  Some even reach between 3 - 6 lb.  

 

Local tackle shops can give details of most lochs in the county.  Permits from local tackle shops, hotels and estate offices.

Loch Watten

 

Loch Watten is often described as the “Leven of the North” on account of the quality wild brown trout that it offers to anglers. 

 

The Loch can be fished from the bank or boat and attracts visitors from all over the United Kingdom and visiting anglers from abroad who are attracted by the quality of the fish and beautiful surroundings.

The Loch extends 3 miles in length and between ¼ and ½ mile in width, with an average depth of 7 to 8 feet. 

 

The water is very clean and clear.  A strain of trout similar to Loch Leven trout is 3/4lb with occasional specimens up to 3lb.  Healthy fish produce a strong fight for the angler.

The fishing season runs from May 1st to September 30th.

 

Boats can be rented from Hugo Ross in Wick and from other local sources including George Calder at Central Caravans.

 

£25 per day per boat (2 anglers), £25 per day for outboard engine. All boats are first class 15ft Loch Lomond's and can be supplied with Yamaha outboard engines if required
